Frequently Asked Questions

01
What is a straw sip?
Check out the wall system page, but, in short, straw SIPs are eco-friendly, load-bearing panels that combine insulation and strength, and offer a sustainable alternative to foam SIPs.
02
Will straw attract pests?
Properly built straw walls do not attract pests:
-
Compacted & sealed, little space for rodents or insects.
 -
Encased in plaster or sheathing , no direct access to straw.
 -
Straw has low food value , not attractive as a food source.

Risks only arise if straw is left unsealed or gets wet, which can invite pests or mold. With good detailing and maintenance, straw walls are no more pest-prone than wood-frame walls.
03
Does a straw wall have moisture issues?
Straw walls don’t inherently have moisture problems, but they must stay dry:
-
Safe when sealed, plaster or facings protect the straw.
 -
Breathable finishes let small amounts of moisture escape.
 -
Good detailing (overhangs, raised foundations, drainage) keeps water out.

Issues only arise if straw gets wet and stays damp, or if vapor is trapped. With proper design and maintenance, straw walls can last for decades without moisture damage.
04
What is the benefit of being premanufactured?
Premanufactured components are built in before delivery, which makes construction faster, cheaper, more precise, safer, and less wasteful than traditional on-site building.
05
Are there health benefits to living in a straw bale house?
Straw bale houses can promote cleaner air, stable comfort, and fewer toxins, provided moisture is well managed.
