Straw Bale Structurally
Insulated Panels

The S-SIP

S-SIPs are modular building components that accelerate construction timelines and reduce the amount of labor needed on site.

S-SIPs blends efficient, modern fabrication processes with the tested environmental, health, and thermal benefits of natural building practices to craft a highly insulative, carbon negative, and naturally fire-retardant system that revolutionizes building methods.

Straw S-SIPS are a game changer in construction.

Sustainability
  • Made from compressed agricultural byproducts (like straw), they repurpose waste into durable building materials.

  • Reduce reliance on petrochemical foams typically used in SIPs.

  • Store carbon in the walls, lowering a building’s overall footprint.

High Performance
  • Straw provides excellent thermal resistance (high R-value).

  • Continuous panel design eliminates thermal bridging common in stud-frame walls.

  • Creates stable, energy-efficient interiors with lower heating and cooling costs.

Structural Strength
  • Like traditional SIPs, straw S-SIPs are load-bearing panels.

  • Strong enough for walls, roofs, and floors, while resisting warping or shifting.

Fire & Safety Performance
  • Densely packed straw inside facings have high fire resistance, since oxygen is limited within the panel.

  • With proper finishes and detailing, panels surpass fire code standards.

Health & Comfort
  • Use of natural materials (straw, lime, clay, OSB facings) means low VOCs and improved indoor air quality.

  • Thick panels also dampen sound, making homes quieter and more comfortable.

Efficiency in Construction
  • Panels are premanufactured in a factory and delivered to site ready to install.

  • This speeds up construction, reduces labor costs, and minimizes waste.

The Assembly

PANEL ASSEMBLY 1 - WHITE_edited.avif

The system is comprised of several components to ensure long-term thermal performance and excellent indoor air quality.

Each panel is protected by vapor-permeable layers on both sides of the building shell. This layered assembly allows moisture to pass freely through the walls to maintain balanced humidity levels, but prevents air from leaking in our out.

Not only do they provide a structural wall system, they can also save up to 75% on heating and cooling costs due to their excellent thermal properties. Under compression, each panel achieves consistent R-values (R-35+).

Panelized straw bale construction make use of agricultural byproducts (straw) to store atmospheric carbon into our buildings for hundreds of years.

At the end of their lifecycle, they can be easily replaced, repaired, or if nothing else, composted.
